Nicholas L. is the nerdy second-in-command of the Fourth Cafe and Diner. He is widely considered to be the smartest CaD employee, and has a special interest in parking cars.

Biography

Nick joined the Cafe and Diner in August 1995, alongside his twin sister Ex-44A and Manager No. 1. Using the code name UFO, he and the rest of the First Cafe became known as the "Anathemas" after defeating Satan and sealing him away.

After the First Cafe went up in smoke, and the original Owner died, Nick left the CaD for more Indigo pastures. This was, however, a trick; they knew that A23 had some sort of nefarious scheme going, and it was Nick's job to infiltrate the organisation and find out what that was. He rose to the ranks of Division Hotel, with the code name California, where he discovered Astoria's plot to destroy the Otherside with Abaddon. The Second Cafe was able to stop this, of course, but doing so left them scattered, bruised and beaten, and the Cafe and Diner closed again.

In 2017, Nick was found to be living in Astoria, Oregon with No. 1. Unbeknownst to Jackie - the 8 at the time - Nick was working for the Deep Corp 23, an organisation made up of the remnants of the First Cafe, who's goal was to cast doubt upon the Third Cafe's Investors: Muldra Yonomo and Sophie Grenbelrn. Nick later surfaced again during the Cafe Crisis, assisting the Third Cafe. When Muldra Yonomo took over the Cafe and Diner, Nick took the code name Employee No. 44B, his sister taking 44A.

During the Fourth Cafe's Otherworldly Adventures, Nick was a part of Jean's Darn Defiance, a secret organisation within the Cafe and Diner dedicated to action against Mammon and Belphegor's schemes. After Mammon discovered the Darn Defiance, the memories of all the members bar Nick were erased, though they were later brought back.

While the Fourth Cafe was dealing with the Haunting of 112, Nick - newly promoted to Manager No. 2 - and Manager No. 5 journeyed through the universe and outside of it to find Nikki. Though they did eventually find her, she had decided to die in order to become the Prince of Lust, replacing the recently-dead Asmodeus.

While Nick has spent much of the most recent Cafe unnecessarily attempting to park Mr. Bartlett's car, he has otherwise been a very helpful presence, and the CaD is lucky to have him.

Personality

To put it simply, Nick is a huge nerd, with a real fixation on the unusual. He has some conspiracy theorist tendencies, such as when he was convinced that Mr. Bartlett needed a valet. He is also very stubborn; despite the fact that the Cafe and Diner don't park cars - because there are none to park - Nick continues to stubbornly maintain his belief that there is something out there that needs his premium valet service.

Despite his oddities, he is easily the most intelligent employee of the CaD, and he tends to like tough-to-crack ciphers and other such codes. This has the unfortunate side effect of him being somewhat of a pedant, and can easily get frustrated when someone doesn't understand something.

• All of his immediate family members are current or former CaD employees; Ex-44B is his twin sister and Employees No. 26 and No. 44 are his parents.
• Seems to get along well with No. 1, due to their long history.
