Fenrir, Julius, he’s doing all of this for Joy? Or, well, that’s what Rico said. I could believe that much. Julius, even completely Blighted out of his mind, wouldn’t just destroy the world over nothing. We’ve talked about it before, actually. Back when he was mostly bedridden due to the Fountain’s toxins, we talked about what would happen if the Blight took him over. He told me with a great deal of confidence that he would run to the farthest edge of the Otherside and then let the Blight within him “burst,” hopefully just taking himself out in the process.
But… if there was a chance to bring Joy back? I think he’d take it. Joy… well, I think most of us were there, right? Maybe not the Pathologist, Kikimora, or Blackwood, though I’d be surprised if you didn’t hear about it. Killing an Elder is not easy. It first requires the Elder to share their power with a mortal. That’s not too uncommon, especially for Elders who live outside of the Universe but still want to interfere with its workings. Those pacts have a very specific energy to them. An energy that Warden was able to amplify, ultimately leading to a complete collapse of the Elder host. A by-product of this method is the “residue” of the Elder sticking with their still-living mortal.
When we killed the Wicked, Joy volunteered to be the “weak link.” It went well at the time. The Wicked’s Blight in Jericho and Julius had all but deactivated, and Joy was seemingly able to control the Blight due to her being a Livingstone. To be fair, she was born to be a vessel of the Wicked, after all. Though… Jericho found out a little too late that it wasn’t Joy keeping the Wicked’s residual Blight in check. It was the Mantle of 8. So, when he destroyed the Mantle… he doomed Joy. She was quick to seal herself off in some sort of crystal. But releasing her from that crystal could very well doom the Universe. So, we all made the difficult decision to leave her in Eden.
I guess Eve must have convinced Julius she has a way to safely remove her from the crystal and cleanse her Blight. I don’t think Julius expects to survive any of this. Based on what he said back in the Locker, it seems like his plan is to free Joy so that when the Universe gets rewound, she’ll be able to come back instead of being trapped in the Black Thorn.
