I don’t want to kill Zagan. I didn’t want to kill Haagenti. But there’s no other way, is there? Zagan won’t stop until he’s brought back the Pale, and the last thing we need is another Cold Elder messing things up. Fate was meticulous, cold, and uncaring—but the Pale is so much worse. I wish things could have been different for all of us. At the time, I was excited for the chaos killing Fate would bring. It was the opportunity Rune’s ambitions were waiting for, the chance to finally make our move and complete his work. But now…? I just wish things were how they were before Fate died.
I suppose, on some level, the Cafe and Diner was never meant to be, was it? It was just an amalgamation of the forces of Fate and the Otherman pushing us together. Without it, I would’ve probably ended up in the same place—or worse. I wouldn’t have had any of you to save me. Even if the Cafe is dead, I’m glad you’re all still here, even if it’s not quite the same. If only things could’ve been different for Zagan. He has no one left but the Pale.
He wasn’t always so devoted to the Pale. I mean, sure, he worshipped the Pale long before I met him. But back then, it was just a footnote. Something casual. A quiet little discomfort in our friendship. The Pale, even in its eternal slumber, offered Zagan power and knowledge far beyond what he could’ve had on his own, and he took it. At the time, I fooled myself into thinking he was smart for doing so. Gifts from a patron who has been dormant for eons upon eons? How clever! I should’ve known that there’d be a price to pay. There always is. Everything ends up equivalent, one way or the other.
