"You look so much like your mother."

"...I get that a lot."

"How is Eve? It’s been ages since I last saw her, the wretched widow."

Lucifer locked eyes with the masked Archon, a wave of nausea washing over her. This was the man who had deceived her mother, used her for his own gain, and unleashed the Pale upon the world. She found herself unable to speak.

"But you’re nothing like her, are you?" the Archon continued as he placed his head in his hand, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "A shame. You are far too bright. Your mother? She is a void. A mere vessel for creation. But you, my dear, you shine with purpose. You shine with life. That is why he thinks you must be snuffed out."

"Excuse me?"

"Oops." The Archon shrugged, a mocking smile behind the mask. "A secret slipped. Back in Entropy, Master Xsepaghiasma would have had my mouth sewn shut for that. Fortunately, we’re in a less savage world now. No more Masters. Though… Demiurge—he is not unlike a Master himself, he was destined to be one, after all. And Masters, well, they are cruel. Demiurge wants nothing more than to reset everything, to restore what was. And you? You are not part of the old order. Let me share another secret with you: he’s close. Metatron and your eldest sibling, Belphegor, are crafting the means of your undoing right now. Your time is almost up. I hope you’ve enjoyed it."

"...I... I don't understand."

"My lips are sealed. Perhaps you should ask Belphegor yourself."

In an instant, the masked Archon vanished, leaving the air heavy with dread. The library around Lucifer seemed ready to collapse, the floorboards threatening to give way beneath her, plunging her into an unending abyss. Her ears burned with a secret she was never meant to hear, and her mind struggled against the tightening web of revelation.

She had to talk to Belphegor.

Lucifer fled the library, escaping Arcadia, and flew toward her sister’s usual resting place deep beneath Skald's lake. But as she approached her family’s most secret sanctuary, a snake draped lazily from a tree before the entrance, blocking her path.

"Where are you off to, Lucifer?"

"I'm sorry—who are you?"

"One of Belphegor's children. I was sent to guard the lake."

Lucifer's heart pounded in her chest, her deepest fears materializing. "What do you mean 'guard,' Serpent? It is my right as one of Abraxas' children to go beneath the lake—to speak with my sister."

"It's nothing to worry about," the Serpent replied with a lazy hiss. "I'm just making sure no one goes in... or out. For a while."

"Let me pass."

"I can't do that. Belphegor's orders. Sorry, sunshine."

Lucifer glared at the Serpent, but he remained unmoved. With a heavy sigh, she sank to the ground beneath the tree and began to weep. The Serpent slithered down beside her, placing a reassuring coil around her shoulder.

"Hey, hey now. What’s wrong?"

"You know what they're working on, right? A way to turn back time. To undo all of this. You, me, everything. Demiurge wants to return to the world before the Pale."

"That’s... not what I heard. Wait—you’re serious? We’ve got to stop them. Or something. I rather like living." The Serpent exclaimed, winding himself around Lucifer's arm. "Come on, let’s go!"

Lucifer dried her eyes and stood. "Really? You're not much of a guard, you know that, right?"

"Eh," the Serpent said, tilting his head in a nonchalant shrug, "we get our work ethic from our mother."
