Clue 4: Check out the TDD receipts, then give the scientific name.

Answer and Explanation

Answer: Canis Familiaris
Explanation: The word 'charge' is, in heraldry, the symbol on the 'shield' of the family's achievement of arms. The Langley Family's crest is a bloodhound, or dogs in general, which has the scientific name of Canis Familiaris.

Receipt: CD-RIP03
Author: Ned
Status: Cafe Diner
Subject: Business as Usual

Here’s the transcript from the bulk of our family meeting. I figured I’d record it on the CaDCom because while you can’t all be Langleys, and logistically getting everyone to the Necropolis would be a nightmare, you sure are family enough in my eyes to be kept in the loop.

S.O.T.

Ned: Alright! Thank you all for coming to this family meeting. First, any unsettled business?

Jethro: Who’s the cowboy?

Ned: That’s my boy, Travis!

Lazarus: I thought Nick was your kid?

Nick: I am.

Ned: He is. Travis’ is my other son.

Jethro: From another mother? Eddard, you sly dog!

Parthenia: He’s adopted.

Dameris: He’s a little old to be adopted, though, isn’t he?

Solomon: He’s a Langley. That’s all that matters. Any other business?

Jethro: As a matter of fact—

Solomon: Serious business?

Travis: If’n I may?

[Solomon nodded toward Travis]

Travis: We’re missin’ a few, ain’t we? I know the trip is troublesome for a few, but Malachi and Magdelena could’ve made it, right?

Lazarus: And Nancy’s not here yet, either.

Solomon: Malachi doesn’t like to leave the Ouroboros, and Magdelena has moved on.

Travis: Moved on? She…?

Solomon: She asked to be released from Belphegor’s service, and, seeing as she hasn’t popped back up anywhere else… I hope she’s found peace wherever thereafter is.

Ned: As for Nancy, well, she’s the main subject of our meeting, Laz. She’s gotten in with the Secret.

Abner: The Cold Elder? That can’t be good.

Dameris: Who’s the Secret?

Parthenia: One of the oldest Elders of the Universe. The embodiment of the concept of secrets. Right, Solomon?

Solomon: Yes. That’s about it.

Dameris: Well, what would Nancy want from a thing like that?

[Warren warped into the CaDCom transcription range with Nancy and Norbert Langley]

Nikki: Mom!

Nancy: Hello dear. Good to see everyone. Darling.

[Nancy smiled as she gave Ned a kiss.]

Ned: We were just talking about you.

Nancy: I figured. You also left poor Norbert at home.

Norbert: He asked. I didn’t want to come.

Nancy: That is not how family meetings work, Norbert, and you know it.

Jethro: So, you’ve fallen in with some unknowable and… sinister I assume?

[Solomon nodded.]

Jethro: Sinister eldritch entity. How could you, Nancy? We all looked up to you!

Dameris: She was literally banned from our home.

Jethro: Lazarus and I looked up to you! Papa and Ma… well, they didn’t really like you all that much.

Nancy: I can’t say much. I’m bound by Secret, and he notoriously doesn’t take well to blabbermouths. But… I can say that I did it for you. For all of you. For all of us.

Solomon: Well, that vague assurance is worth nothing.

Nancy: Look—I wasn’t planning on the Universe’s existence hanging on by a thread. When I made my deal with Secret, I thought I would have more time. But… Secret’s promise should stick around in this Universe and the next.

Solomon: You’ve already received payment, then?

Nancy: In part. Though it’s revokable if I fail in my duties.

Solomon: I see… I don’t suppose you…?

Nancy: There’s one way to find out.

Solomon: In due time, I suppose.

Ned: It’s not something I can know about, huh? Come on, Solomon, you could whisper it to me.

Solomon: It’s not my place to say. I’m sorry, Ned. Though, Nancy, you know… sometimes even the best intentions end up hurting people, right? Is this… would this be…?

Nancy: I know. It’d be an adjustment. But… I know that it’s what needs to be done.

Solomon: And… Enoch, Antionette, and Theodosia?

Nancy: Would carry over.

Solomon: …And Abner, Malachi, and myself?

Nancy: Well, that’d be up to you. But yes. Every Langley.

Lazarus: Travis too?

Nancy: Oh, Travis. What are you doing here?

Travis: Ned adopted me, I reckon.

Nancy: I see. Well, welcome to the family, dear. Though, I don’t know if—

Solomon: If I understand it, he would, by the terms outlined. He’s a Langley.

Norbert: I’d like to opt out of Nancy’s eldritch deal.

Ned: I don’t think you can, Norb. You just have to trust she’s done the right thing.

Norbert: Do you trust she did?

Ned: Never a doubt.
