I think I’ve found what we’re looking for: the “Black-Veins.” They’re a group of undead demons living on the outskirts of the Eclipse Ring in the Necropolis. Apparently, they’re a rare breed of demons that are incredibly hard to kill. They feed on blood to stay youthful and are seriously afraid of bright lights. Well, any light in general, if these texts are to be believed. That’s why they live so far from the Necropolis, practically on the edge of the Everdark. There are even rumors that the Black-Veins feast on other demons… which might explain why most of the Necropolis doesn’t mind them staying far, far away from them.
From the history I’ve pieced together, this is an ancient family of demons, dating back to when the Crossroads Ring was the outermost ring. As the Discovery Ring expanded, it displaced the Black-Veins, pushing them farther out. Then, as the Eclipse Ring grew, it happened again. And as the Eclipse Ring continues to expand, they’ll be pushed even farther, at some point. Their current home, the Manoir des Veines Noires, is a region most demons in the Necropolis avoid entirely for fear that they’ll end up as the Black-Veins next meal.
However, the Black-Veins generally keep to themselves. Sure, they likely snatch a few demons who wander too far outside the Eclipse Ring for a meal, but their hatred of light and the constant destruction of their home has made them an extremely reclusive bunch. So… why would there be Black-Veins in New Jersey? And why haven’t they tried feasting on humans? You’d think humans would be much easier prey than demons. That’s really the only reason I can imagine for them to bother crossing over to the Flipside. Easy food. But then again, the Flipside is much brighter than the deepest parts of the Necropolis… which is probably why we don’t seem them all that often.
