Our lovely little New Guy mentioned that Grendel is some sort of "Figmented" Demon yesterday. Of course, he had to word it for the Diner, so I figured I should probably put the research everyone's been putting together officially in the Cafe as well! So, Figmented Demons are a subtype of Blooded Demons who are exclusively the children of Naamah and the Devil. Something about their unique union formed Demons who have unkillable bodies. Their souls, however, are very much still bound by the rules of mortality. But a figment of who they used to be always sticks around in the shell left behind. Thus, you get "Figmented" Demons!
This would also mean that the Nuckelavee is also Figmented, and so if we did manage to kill him, his body would lay dormant until a new soul was to take residence inside it. In fact, the Nuckelavee we faced might not even be the same Nuckelavee from decades past. So, where does this leave us with the Grendel? Well, it seems like Umbra used Lucifer's Scyring mirror alongside a fellow Figmented Demon's help to place some sort of "energy" into Grendel's body. However, this seems like it was an incomplete or possibly "corrupted" form of the typical Figmentation seen by Naamah's kids.
Whatever that black goo Umbra put into Grendel's mouth has seemingly stopped the process of taking on a new soul entirely, leaving behind this hellish phantom of pure unrestrained id and ill emotion. I don't know if that's what Umbra was going for, but I kinda doubt it, y'know? I think he must've miscalculated along the way. I don't want to help him or anything like that, but we do know what to do to stop Grendel, at least according to our research. It's—well, it's like New Guy said, we have to unravel the Grendel's tether to whatever soul or energy Umbra put inside of it. His body is a literal vessel; it's not… y'know… "attached" to anything, even that bit of black goo. We just gotta find a way to make him cough it back up.
