Answer and Explanation

Answer: Temporal Torus
Explanation: In CD-RTD06, it says “Being within the Temporal Torus, whatever Madeline “was” would be, I assume, digitized, at least to some extent.”

While my research and hypothesis regarding Mr. Mayne are more speculative, I’ve also been dabbling into the old CaDCom files regarding Dr. Crow and his Temporal Torus. From what I’ve read about the Temporal Torus, it was an attempt at making a Tipler Cylinder-type device. Similar to a Tipler Cylinder, the Torus would have rotated at near-light speeds to create closed timelike curves, essentially opening pathways through time itself. However, the design diverged in that it aimed to limit the paradoxical effects often theorized with time travel—and its design was more congruent with our understanding of the shape of the Universe and the cyclical nature of time.

Now, the missing component to Dr. Crow’s Temporal Torus would’ve been its power source, its method of spinning at near-light speeds, and that’s where Madeline Saturn came into play. She was uniquely gifted with gravity-altering powers. Dr. Crow planned to tip Madeline over the edge into a state of gravitational collapse, essentially creating a localized event horizon to achieve the necessary angular momentum for his Temporal Torus. Now, having what would be more or less a black hole in your local vicinity would be bad. So, Dr. Crow devised a method of “digitizing” (not quite the correct term, but it’s the closest I can think of) Madeline Saturn in this state, creating a unique “power cell” of sorts.

Did it work? No. The Cafe and Diner—Marcus Douglass, specifically—sacrificed himself, causing the Temporal Torus to collapse in on itself before Dr. Crow was able to utilize its theorized time travel properties. There would have been no way to bring Madeline back if her soul had survived, as she would have been brought back into her collapsing state. Though there is a good chance that Dr. Crow was working on a new Temporal Torus and that he held onto the power cell, Madeline was trapped inside. And, if not to power the Temporal Torus, there were plenty of other horrible ideas Dr. Crow could’ve come up with that could have utilized a localized black hole power cell.
