Summary of Receipt

Unfortunately, 71 and the others barely lose to Augustine Sarcophim in finding Mr. Mayne. They caught him as he was leaving, though it seems that - while certainly greatly empowered, and likely under Aka's control - he isn't very skilled with his new powers. The team will head back to regroup, then figure out what to do next. Along with that, he questions why Aka is active since he should be under Umbra's control, along with what the big deal with Augustine Sarcophim (or Mr. Mayne?) is. Still, since Augustine's vanished, the tab (and investigation as a whole) is put on hold.

Tab Tabled Until Further Notice

Ah, I’m afraid we were too late, if only by a few precious seconds. We had just tracked down the mine in which Augustine had been searching for another Mr. Mayne when we saw him with the mummified cryptid in hand. We attempted to stop him, but sure enough, he had quite the magical powers, but I suspect they were not his own. His control of them was uncertain at best. In his haste, I believe he even hurt himself with his bands of tenebrous destruction. Worse, as he fled the mine, I caught a brief glimpse of his eyes, and they were undoubtedly tinted a bloody scarlet.

While this is circumstantial, I fear that there is only one explanation for Augustine’s powers, no? The Redman. With his red eyes and shadow magic, it seems to be the case. Of course, the Redman shouldn’t be playing his game while still under the control of the Hatman… but without evidence, we can’t bring it to a higher power. Of course, perhaps this is mere paranoia. We have been dealing with this Dark Triad for quite some time now. And what would the Redman, more importantly, Satan, want with a would-be Necromancer out in Montana? Surely a suitable target could have been found in the Long Beach area? Or… the victim was less important than the package—Mr. Mayne.

That still wouldn’t answer the greater question of how we ended up involved in their schemes all the way out here. That feels like one too many coincidences, no? Then again, Fate tends to smile upon us. In any case, Augustine Sarcophim has potent shadow magic, and it would be foolish to pursue him now. We need to return to the Cafe to regroup. I suspect we will either cross paths with Augustine again in stopping the Open Doors Church, or we will not hear from him again until he becomes more of a threat. In that spirit, the tab is tabled for now.
