CAFE RECEIPT
RECEIPT NUMBER: FFF06
RECEIPT DATE: 12 17 1988
MANAGER TITLE: EIGHT
RECEIPT NOTES:

So, I’m fated to die, huh? Or—worse than die. That’s wild. You think that’s why the Oracle had no prophecy for me? Because Fate’s big plan for me, as a human, is just… the end? To be reborn as Indrid Cold—the mechanical man with a grin as wide as Fate’s ambitions? Far out.

And let me guess: the only way to stop this is to shut down the Cafe and Diner, run, hide, and wait it out, right? Seems like a pretty sorry plan, if you ask me.

All of this over “the Eight.” Those little words buzzing around in my head like divine inspiration—straight from the source. Straight from the fountain of our lady of mortality, singularity, and sacred knowledge. Does Fate even know what it’s after, do you think? Archons—immortals—they can’t even conceptualize the Eight. It’s incompatible with their minds. It’s ego death for the deathless. A retching poison. Maybe that’s why they’re so desperate to have it—so no one else can use it against them.

Well, I’ll tell you exactly what I think about all this, Jean-Marc. You’re doing all of this for me. Shutting down your dreams to keep me safe. Me. Who the hell am I? You were the Otherman. Lucy’s a Prince of Hell. Felix? A Zulu defector who’s still alive, somehow. And me? I’m just some nobody who just so happens to see the big picture. And you know what? I don’t even see myself in the frame. But I see you. :) I see your Cafe.

Look, I can’t say for sure, but I’ve got a gut feeling that the Cafe and Diner? It’s a lot more than just “keeping the balance.” So don’t go shutting it down on my account. Sure, it’ll be a lot of trouble. But it’ll be worth it. I know it.
