On the drive down, I figured I would update everyone on what we would be dealing with in the Keys. Now, amongst the four of us, I would be surprised if we didn’t already know a good deal regarding chupacabras. They are one of the most common types of cryptids, partially due to their freedom of movement between all seven planes of the Otherside. I know that H.R. and I had a few chupacabras on the compound. Well, they were chupacabra—hybrids created from a Blight process. Still, good-natured creatures.
Chupacabras are the most common cryptid reincarnation of Flipside domesticated dogs. The majority of dogs which die under typical circumstances will end up as chupacabra—a “goat sucker.” The name derives from their affinity for Flipside goat blood, which is the closest thing to Otherside protein they can find when stuck here. Unlike dogs, chupacabras have venom sacs, fangs, scales, nictitating membranes, and vertical pupil slits. I suppose they do tend to appear more reptilian than mammal—though they have retained their mammary glands. Of course, despite some share attributes, chupacabras come in many varieties and we should be prepared to possibly bump Perez's order up from Affogato to Mocha.
Like Flipside dogs, chupacabras come in a variety of “breeds” determined by which plane of the Otherside they show affinity toward. If they had a human owner in life, chupacabras are compelled to find and reunite with them. In a wise decision by the Princes, chupacabras are thus granted free access to the Otherside so that they can reach their former owners. I doubt they’d be able to stop them otherwise. As such, the most common breed of chupacabra is the Ashenox variety seen throughout the Necropolis. The green Emberscales from the Esterskald are also plentiful. Strangely, the Prince of Greed, Mammon, also has a strong affinity for the beasts, and so the various breeds of the Infernus, Argental, Orical, and… "Precious-Mammongese" are also numerous and prone to slipping into the Flipside. With luck we will have a harmless Mammongese to retrieve. Worse, we may have a temperamental Hauntaurhound.
That’s all.
