DINER RECEIPT
RECEIPT NUMBER: RATP04
RECEIPT DATE: 10 26 1988
MANAGER TITLE: BALTIMORE
RECEIPT NOTES:
I can’t help but feel drawn into the gravity of Ms. Saturn—she’s like a pit from which I cannot escape. Our relationship has maintained its curious rhythm thus far: one moment, she’s cold and distant; the next, she’s a spout of thoughts, secrets, and information I couldn’t turn off even if I tried. You might be surprised to learn I offered her a job, though Madeline has turned it down for now. Honestly, I wasn’t sure which way she would lean, though I hoped all this back and forth would have led to a yes.
Then again, she didn’t say no—not exactly, anyway. From what I understand, Ms. Saturn is open to working for the Cafe and Diner. But she also rightly pointed out that we’re not much of a Cafe and Diner yet. And she’s not wrong. We’re still a few years away from our true grand opening, and this early staffing push is entirely my most trusted associate’s doing. For now, I think we can list Ms. Saturn as a tentative maybe and reach out again when we’re closer to being fully operational.
What her role will be once she’s hired, however, is harder to pin down. As you all know, I’ve had a very clear vision for the Cafe since we began this endeavor—a vision with distinct roles: an owner to run things, my guiding light; an expert in the occult; our primary number, of course; a brewmaster; an IT specialist; a customer retention expert; a well-connected consultant; and, eventually, a group of newcomers eager to learn the trade. Ms. Saturn doesn’t quite fit into any of those roles—not as they were originally envisioned. None of them were designed with her in mind.
Still, I think I can adjust. We won’t need the newcomers for a long time, anyway. What’s really in a number after all?
