"Lucifer, I am a very old man, you know," Demiurge began.

"Well, yes, but you are an Archon, of course. Immortal. You do not age. Being old is… relative." Lucifer added, as she sat down next to the great Archon.

"Yes, I suppose it is. When I left Entropy with your parents, I considered myself rather young still. And yet we have spent… eons here, in our Universe. But now, I am tired. My soul has gotten old. The Pale, this… mistake… it wears me down."

"Mistake?"

"Yes. A failure, on my behalf. Now, what I want to tell you, Lucifer, you cannot tell your siblings. I fear that… I fear they will not take my sins as well as you might. You see, the Pale… was the first."

"First, what?"

"First child of your mother."

Lucifer gasped, her eyes widening in shock. Demiurge nodded slowly, his expression heavy with regret. They sat in silence for a while as Demiurge attempted to find the words he needed to say. Lucifer ended up breaking the silence herself, "You and my mother?"

"No! Oh, no, no… no. There was another Archon. A member of House Gelid—he came to our Universe, and he seduced your mother, so very long ago."

"House Gelid?"

"One of the Great Houses. It was a House which stood in opposition to my father and his Houses. I suppose they grew tired of waging their war against him and saw my flight to a new Universe as an easier war to win."

"Why did they want to… seduce my mother?"

"Because I was foolish. I gave her the greatest of our stolen treasures. I gave her the power of Creation itself. She would have guarded such power with greater care… if I had told her what I had given her in the first place."

"Oh. I see." Lucifer reached out, gently brushing her hand against Demiurge's, her touch light and comforting. "So, they… they had a child together. An Archon. And then House Gelid took them and raised them into this monster? A weapon to be used against you?"

A burning tear rolled down Demiurge's face. He struggled with his words, the weight of his past pressing down on him. Finally, he burst into an uncontrollable sob, his body heaving as he struggled to catch his breath. Lucifer felt her own eyes well up with tears as she reached out to comfort Demiurge as best she could. She sat there for some time, gently stroking the back of his head as he cried. Finally, he found the strength to speak again. The strength to confess.

"I made her into that monster."

Lucifer froze in place. "What do you mean?"

"…I reviled that Creation. I sought it destroyed. I… a hammer… it destroys more often than it creates. She wanted to be loved. To be accepted. To be… and I refused. I tried to undo what had already been done. I tried to change fate itself. And look… look what it has brought."

"It... it wasn't all a failure, though." Lucifer offered. Demiurge looked up at the child, who shone as bright as the morning star itself. "I wouldn't be here if that happened. My parents… they wouldn't have built our kingdom, our Skald. Yes… things are… bad. And what you've done…" Demiurge looked away. "…It is a heavy burden to bear. Still, try and think of it as a half-success, at least. I don't think the Universe would be much of anything if it didn't happen in the first place."

"You remind me so much of your mother. You have her wisdom and compassion."

"And I see so much of you in me as well."

"Do you? I would hope not."

"You were born the youngest into an unfathomable lineage of important and impressive people. You're afraid to make mistakes. Afraid to let them down. Afraid to fail. I am too. But it's a part of living, isn't it? To fail and learn? To grow?"

"…to grow."

"Like the flowers in my mother's garden!"

Demiurge smiled as he dried his eyes and saw for the first time the beauty of Eve's scattered pappi.
