Puzzle

“A rather fishy language.”
New Guy Trivia | 1 Word

Clue

Hover over the clues if you require!
Clue 1: Or, I suppose, a fishermen's language.
Clue 2: European (or, more specifically, Germanic) people with a name that came from a fishing-related word.
Clue 3: To be exact, the word 'hook'. What was the language they spoke - or another name for it?

Answer and Explanation

Answer: Anglo-Saxon
Explanation: English comes from Englisċ, "pertaining to the Angles". The theory is that the Angles were called that because they were either fishermen or descended from fishermen, and so England would be "land of the fisherman", and English "fisherman's language". Therefore, the language of the English - especially keeping the character count in mind - would be Anglo-Saxon.

Ārīs and onfōh wlite se bēo of ðām wēstenum wæfende…

That's what the Dark wanted me to translate for them. At least, that's what I remember of it anyway. Also, HI!!! I am writing my very first receipt! It is, yes, it most certainly is, very, very exciting! I am using the CaDCom of someone who was called "Big Guy," which is very similar to my title, which is New Guy! I haven't met this Big Guy before but from what I've heard he seems very, very nice and I hope that I get to meet him soon!

Anyway! Yes, it is true! The Dark wanted me because they believed I could perhaps translate the phrase above into Modern English. Well, yes, I could, easily so… Arise and take form, the Beast of the Wandering Wastes. Or something like that. It certainly sounds like an invocation or summoning phrase. Though I cannot say that I am familiar with a beast of wandering wastes and anything of such sort. Though it could have actually been something closer to "Ārīs and onfōh wlite se micla gāstbēo of ðām wēstenum."

I dunno! I didn't really get a good look at the words. Basically, one day, while I was in my PRISON in the Coral Gardens of Mayda, a strange visitor showed up. He said, and he really did say this, this is what he said, he said: "You desire freedom. I can help you if you help me." And then we talked a bit and he said he'd help me escape if I translated his thing for him and I tricked him! YES! It is true! I tricked him! I told him it said something entirely different, and then I happily went into the Flipside. However, I believe he is aware now that it does not say "Eorþrīs and onfōg wlitig se bēag of ðām wīstmum wēfende."

You know… it's kinda funny. When he heard me say that, it said, "Receive the beautiful ring woven from the Earth's fruits and growth." He seemed really excited by that. I wonder why!
