I had a chat with No. 17 today about… well… me! Well, more so, the people who made me this way, the “Zulus.” Unfortunately, No. 17 couldn’t share too much because of his Oath of Silence. Or, uh, Zilence. Is it supposed to be spelled with a Z? That’s how it shows up in the transcript, anyway!

S.O.T.

No. 512: Hey, [No. 17]. You used to be in Division Zulu, right?

No. 17: A long time ago, yes. Must have been… around 40… maybe 50 years now.

No. 512: I see…

No. 17: Why?

No. 512: I’m just trying to figure out… what they did to me. Why they did what they did to me.

No. 17: Ah. I see. Unfortunately… I cannot say much.

No. 512: Why not?

No. 17: To be in Division Zulu one must take the Oath of Zilence. A ritual which binds our fates to our words, eh? There are many secrets I cannot share unless I seek a fate worse than death.

No. 512: Oh. What fate is worse than death…?

No. 17: Ah, but that is one of the many secrets, no?

No. 512: Well, I don’t want to get you in trouble or anything!

No. 17: I suppose you wouldn’t know much about the Zulus, eh? Come, I’ll share what I can.

No. 512: Are you sure?

No. 17: Of course. I know what I can and cannot share. Well, by now, you must have been told the broad strokes of the Astoria 23rd Agency, yes? One piece of the “world” government. The Indigos. Each branch is led by one of the four known Indigo Children—chosen spiritual leaders. Each Indigo Organization serves a different function, IRIS is concerned with judicial matters, Yaksha, perhaps you could say, handles legislative work, and Ozhogs are purely focused on carceral affairs. Which leaves Astoria to…?

No. 512: Executive?

No. 17: In a sense, yes. Moreover, the Astorians are massive compared to the other Indigos. They are so massive that they are organized into 23 smaller divisions.

No. 512: …I thought there were 26?

No. 17: X-Ray, Yankee, and Zulu are—for all intents and purposes third party contracts. X-Ray is a Division of only one. Yankee is the thin thread of gossamer which ties the U.S. Government to the Indigo Governments. And then… then there is the Zulus. On paper they are in charge of Cults and Esoteric Affairs for the Astorians, but in truth they are a Cult themselves.

No. 512: Why do they work for the Astorians then?

No. 17: Many reasons, some I cannot divulge, but the general answer is money and freedom. The Zulus are often paid quite well for their work.

No. 512: …which is?

No. 17: Mm. Secret, no? But… I can share a common rumor, can’t I? It is said by other Divisions that the Zulus are working towards… Godhood. Ego Death. Immortality.

No. 512: Is that why… I can’t die?

No. 17: Possibly. However, I don’t believe you achieved what they were going for. You are likely an Elderling. Hard to kill but not unkillable.

No. 512: I… see. Is there anything else you can tell me?

No. 17: No. Not without crossing a few uncrossable lines. Though, once [No. 5] is back, you might try asking him. His brother is one of the Indigos, after all.

No. 512: What?! Really?
