Clue 1: What did 'a Devil' use to bargain with Jean?
Clue 2: More specifically, in that deal which cleaved this new world's margin.
Clue 3: Look back through Bad Omens' DD-LUX01.

Answer and Explanation

Answer: The Pocketwatch
Explanation: The full quote would be ‘They thought it wise a devil’s bargain, which cleaved this new world’s margin’ - the ‘new world’s margin’ would be the Otherworld, which came about as a result of Jean-Marc and Belphegor’s deal. Said deal was mainly about the Pocketwatch.

“If there were more food and fewer people, this would be a perfect party.”

Lucky me, after the whole Nyx business, I was able to pull our fearless and usually rather reclusive leader aside to ask him a few questions about the nature of the Otherworld. Now, I will say this much: of the people who currently have access to the Espresso Affairs, he is one. So, hi Jean, how are ya? Good, I hope. Also, hi Nick. However, it does bring up the massive question… if you aren’t going to tell us everything you know… why do you have Julia and I investigating this? Like… you need to let us in on some of these important details for Pete’s Coffee Sake!

Of course, you were naturally aloof and rather coy. To be expected. I really liked the touch of you asking ME what I’VE uncovered. But let’s be honest, Jean, we both know you know way more about the Otherworld than I do. You know more about just about everything, huh? Or at least it always seems that way. And do you know why that is? HMM?? That’s right! You have “special memories.” This is what we talked about today, and I’ll document a bit here. Now, I know you don’t like writing down your “special memories,” but you can’t really change what has never been before, huh?

So, yes, Julia, if you were unaware (and I’d imagine you are) Jean-Marc Chausson, the true and rightful owner of the Cafe and Diner is not from this Universe. BOOM. Mind blown. And no, I don’t mean Cycle. I mean the Universe. A Sphere, by another name. No wonder his energy has always felt different from everyone and everything else… he is literally an anachronism. Now, you must be wondering how did Jean-Marc survive the collapse of the prior Universe? He made a deal—a devil’s bargain.

Right at the moment the prior Universe began to collapse in on itself Jean-Marc struck a deal with Mammon and Belphegor to use something called the Pocketwatch (one word, I checked) to construct the new Universe. The Universe you, I, (and also Nick, hi again) exist in. So! Jean-Marc has memories of what happened in the prior Universe which is why he ALWAYS seems to be eight steps ahead of everyone—because he actually was.

However, he said the events of this Universe and the prior one officially fully diverged with the death of Lucifer. So, now he’s just as lost as the rest of us. Uh-huh… “Sure.” Though… I guess it does explain why the Otherworld seems to be so foreign to him because, apparently, it did not exist in the prior Universe AT ALL. Though this does solidify what we (read: you, Julia) need to do next… we need to get Mammon’s side of the story. Somehow.
