I knew it. I wish I didn't, but, well, I did.
Remember those vials of the Red Rain I kept in ampoules? I've been working out a way to attune them to a specific sin with the help of #17. As Padre's Anathema of Envy, all seven samples were strongly attracted to him, to the point they would cling to him even through their ampoules. However, leaving just one sample with #17 for 24 hours caused the sample to turn a bright yellow color. It also seems to have lost its attraction to him, though the further the sample is from #17, the more it returns to its base blood-red state.
In essence, I believe it has become an effective Anathema detector, attuned to the sin of Envy. Of course, it does little to warn us in advance if someone will become an Anathema, but it can at least confirm if someone is, per the Soul Accord, "in plena sin." For the time being, #17 is going to hold onto his vial of Red Rain as once a sample is attuned, it seems unresponsive to any other sins. And, perhaps, the sample will develop further as it continues to be exposed to #17's overwhelming… well, it isn't quite scientific, but "aura" of Envy.
Now, for the bad yet expected news, I gave my sister a vial to hold onto for 24 hours. Just as #17's turned yellow, #1313's turned pink. Utilizing the common Hauntaurskaldian sin color associations, it's clear she has become the Anathema of Lust. I suppose her desire to murder the Redman truly got the better of her. Though having seen the process unfold twice, we are now beginning to get a better picture of how one becomes an Anathema. Some external force, likely orchestrated by Satan, seems to exert a core sin on a person until they reach a tipping point that clouds their judgment completely until they consecrate their sin through some sort of "action."
Now, we just need to figure out how to detect it before it happens and how to stop it once we see the signs.
