Receipt: OOO04
Author: Brent
Status: Diner
Subject: The Daggers

I knew it was an error. It had to be. Nothing more than an oversight and a rather egregious one at that. I pulled out the little “Triple Threat” pact we made so many years ago. I had not even uttered the first sentence before, lo and behold, Oakmoss appeared in a flash of slicing light. I suppose the terms of our agreement had slipped her mind as, should I have properly invoked them, it would have put the Daggers in a rather precarious position. Like I said earlier, the only way forward from pulling the pact on Oakmoss and Warden would be death or a place among the Daggers…

Look. We’re in a tough spot, are we not? Everything seems to be winding down and coming to an end. While I was hurt that I had been passed up by the Daggers so many times before this, I can forgive and forget. I need to see my research through, and I fear the only way I can do that is to twist the knife myself. I’m sorry. I truly am. Amber, Jackie… everyone, the least I could do is say my thanks and farewell. It’s not an end, it’s a start.

Very few ascend to the status of the Obscure. I am now among them. Very few ascend without stabbing a few good friends along the way. Even if I could have left without it, it is our way. Life by the dagger. A lonely, cold life. Few can make it work. Only those truly prepared to make the necessary sacrifices. Like myself. I will do what it takes to see my research to its end. *Even this.*
