I won’t lie. #26 made it sound easy to catch a Squonk. Not that we haven’t seen any running around, mind you. The problem is that they turn into a puddle of tears so fast. We haven’t been able to even get a jar near their snout before they’re already soaking into the ground. We’ve collected like a few teaspoons of what we THINK is the stuff we’re after, but it’s hard to say if we even got the right stuff. There’s got to be some sort of trick to these things…
Something interesting we’ve observed is that the Squonks seem to just launch into the Flipside. Like they are literally shooting out of the Otherside. I called #26 to ask about that, and according to Ciel, “Kick the Squonk” is apparently a fairly popular game in the Esterskald. Enjoyed by both demons and larger, more aggressive cryptids, everyone seems to find kicking these guys to be a fun pastime. I think that might be where we’re running into trouble, actually. If the Squonks are coming into the Flipside via punt, of course, they’re going to be on the verge of crying themselves to death.
Assuming that is the case… how can we get an un-kicked pre-death cry Squonk? Without going all the way to the Esterskald, that is. Maybe the kick is only part of the problem, and it’s the thud that really freaks them out? We could set up some Squonk nets and see if we can give them a softer landing into the Flipside. We could even put some pots and pans under the nets to catch their tears and hopefully snot. Eh, what’s the worst that can happen? We’ve only got another day and a half before we need to catch our flight to the Aux Arcs and then home.
