I might not have Rune’s ambitions in me anymore, but I still have his memories. Bits and pieces of them, anyway. When I, well, you know, eat someone, I only get their memories for a few hours at best and only if I eat their brain. When I ate Rune, however, I ate him whole, soul and all. Which let his memories (among other things) linger longer than they should’ve. Over time I reinforced the memories I wanted to keep making them, in a way, my own memories. This is how I know about the Black-Vein Vampires. And, I suppose, I am cut from the same cloth.

The Black-Vein Vampires were an experiment of Asmodeus, an attempt to share her blood with other lesser demons. I can’t say I know why she did it. No one beyond perhaps the eldest of the Vampire does. If I, and by extension Rune’s memories, had to take a guess, she was attempting to create her own type of Boogieman, akin to Satan’s. Though, Asmodeus’ lust for her Plane and its power kept her from ever directly sharing it. But, her blood, that was alright. Better than alright, exciting even. Filling lesser demons with her own essence, having pawns she could bend to her will would’ve been ideal for Asmodeus. Though, it didn’t work as intended. Asmodeus wasn’t left with subservient thralls—she was left with mirrors of her own immeasurable lust.

Beyond their own ambitions for power, the blood of Asmodeus seemed to grant the Black-Veins the ability to further extract energy from other demons by consuming parts of them. The same powers that I have. Flesh for memories, blood for emotions, and souls for ambitions. In addition to their powers of consumption, like me, they can’t die under normal circumstances. However, unlike me, they can be destroyed by prolonged exposure to light. Before he died, Rune was elated that I didn’t seem to share that weakness. I would’ve been a much more potent weapon than they were.
