Summary of Receipt

71 (a Zulu defector?) gets 17 in touch with Shaka, head of the Zulu division of Astoria 23rd. The transcript was apparently edited to be ‘Zilent-compliant’, but it goes like this: 17 asks for information on Padre’s two books. Shaka says nothing, and instead suggests to ask one of Padre’s group, before requesting to talk to 8/the Owner about the ‘Indigo Wars’.

Transcript

RECEIPT #004 FILED UNDER: CAFE-COS4 DATE: 0E/25/95 EMPLOYEE #17 & 71 I have been speaking with 71, and he has put me in touch with an extraordinary contact of his—Shaka from Zulu. I’m still in the process of putting all the strings in the right places, but Shaka’s knowledge is invaluable. Of course, 71 was not able to accompany me due to the reason that Shaka will kill him, but still, I appreciate the connection. Here is the transcript of our conversation approved by Shaka to be Zilent-compliant. -17

S.O.T

17: Thank you for sitting down with me, Shaka. I must say it is an honor.

Shaka: Why is that? Do you consider me to be special?

17: From what I’ve heard of you, you are very special indeed.

Shaka: Baseless rumors and nothing more. After all, I am the head of the lowest Astoria 23rd Division.

17: Ah, if you insist.

Shaka: Now, how you got my contact information I can only assume [71] gave it to you, is that so?

17: I can’t say.

Shaka: [71] did always choose good friends. Now, I assume you wouldn’t bother me unless it was a pressing matter.

17: [Padre]. He’s in Long Beach.

Shaka: So? He and his siblings do travel from time to time. Is he threatening anything specifically?

17: He’s working with [Mrs. Umbra], [Mrs. Aka], and [Mrs. Pleasant].

Shaka: Ah. That does change things. [Mrs. Umbra]... now that is a threat worth considering. So what do you want me to do? Go give this to Alpha?

[17 and Shaka laugh]

Shaka: No, of course not. Do you want Zulu to take care of this?

17: No, we can handle this. Besides, I’m sure Zulu is busy with… things I shouldn’t know about. No, I just need to know about [Padre]’s other book.

Shaka: Oh, so he’s going that route. Interesting. I can’t say anything about that. My lips are sealed. But I’m sure you could bother one of his consorts. He would know all about that book. Assuming you can find him.

17: A lead is a lead. Thank you, Shaka.

Shaka: One more thing, [17]. Tell [The Number] I need to speak with him concerning the Indigo Wars.

E.O.T

---

It is a shame he would kill me, for Shaka truly is a useful informant. Well, I don’t know if he would kill me… But I assume he doesn’t take kindly to Zulu defectors. Without saying much, the terms of my employment with them were pretty clear on “leaving.” You don’t. However, Shaka will not hunt me down. He is far too busy with Zulu and their work. Besides, as long as I keep to the Code of Zilence he should have no problem with me other than I am a few years late to work. That is a problem for the future. For now, it seems we need to find Dorian. -71
