The arm is mine. Its original owner is now dead. With full control, I no longer feel pain or discomfort from it. The original owner was a horrible demon known as the Stalker of Salem, a prolific serial killer in the 18th century. If you haven’t made the connection yet, the Stalker of Salem’s human identity was that of Nathaniel Van Benthuysen, No. 44’s youngest brother. Why Mrs. Evakui chose Nathaniel is unknown. Part of me believes Mrs. Evakui has a sick sense of humor. The more rational part of me leans towards the fact Nathaniel had ten arms as a demon. Well, nine. None now that he is dead.
No. 44 is alright, for those wondering. She was not close to her brother, or much of her family for that matter. I believe she got satisfaction from being higher up in the Hauntaurskald’s food chain than her brother. At least, that was the impression I had. We left the Stalker’s body buried out in the wastes of Pandemonium, though No. 44 took one of his fifty fingers as a trophy. I assume she’ll be enchanting it into some morbid familial jewelry.
A thought occurred to me as we were burying the Stalker, have I now claimed the title of a Vile Wretch? For those who aren’t aware, the Vile Wretches are the lowest class of citizens in the Vile City. They are demons, or half-demons, who have slain another in Pandemonium and have then made it to the Vile City. I suppose I now qualify for such a title, though I have doubts about whether Satan would recognize the distinction for a Cafe employee. Perhaps when the coffee is cooler, it might be worth testing with the help of No. 26 and No. 44.
