CAFE RECEIPT
RECEIPT NUMBER: AZM06
RECEIPT DATE: 9 21 19XX
MANAGER TITLE: MON AMOUR
RECEIPT NOTES:

We’ve done all we can about the lights in Death Valley. As far as I can tell, we’ve cleared out the Min Min Lights, leaving only the flickers of the Universe tearing itself apart. But there’s nothing more we can do from here. We’ve also sent our newest hire—Secret—to probe his connections, to see if anyone else has a sense of what’s happening to the Universe. On one hand, it’d be ideal if someone already had the answers we need. On the other… that kind of knowledge in the wrong hands could be very, very dangerous.

I… I haven’t always seen eye-to-eye with Him. But I’ve known Him my whole life. He practically raised me—before… before everything. Literally before there was a Universe as we know it today. That’s how far back we go. And it’s not like Him to just… disappear. Even more, it’s not like Him to ignore me. So I doubt He’s simply gone reclusive. Hell, He’d jump at any chance to talk my ear off, especially if it meant sharing some quirky little factoids about humans. And I’ve always loved listening to those.

Something’s definitely off, though. I just can’t place it. Sometimes it stings to still be considered “mortal,” even if—come on—you don’t live this long as a “mortal.” But unlike the Elders, or even Belphegor’s children, I don’t have the same level of “cosmic insight” they do. I’m along for the ride, just like everyone else. And, of course, the me I am now isn’t exactly the same me from way, way back. But I still have sparks of the memories.

Honestly, I don’t think I’d even want to be an Elder full-time. There’s something… comforting in the change that death brings for us Princes. A chance to become someone new. To try again and maybe do things differently. Somehow, I doubt the Lucifer of long ago would’ve opened a Cafe and Diner.
