AND RECEIPT
RECEIPT NUMBER: FFF01
RECEIPT DATE: 12 7 1988
MANAGER TITLE: BALTIMORE
RECEIPT NOTES:
I’m being watched.
Of course, when you’re always on camera, what else can you do but smile? Pay fealty to Fate itself. Mimic its horrid, stretched maw. Smile, and pretend you’re unbothered. But I am bothered. Terrified, even. I can’t let them know that I fear them—that I fear Fate.
I can’t shake the sinking feeling that I’ve made a terrible mistake. I gave up everything to have it all repeat. Gave up all the progress I’d made pushing that damn boulder uphill, just to watch it roll back to the bottom. Now? I’m mortal. Eightless. Stripped of second sight. And Fate? Fate is still an Archon. A god—God, I hope I know what I’m doing.
At the same time, I can’t ignore the fear that I am our undoing—the weak link in my own plans. My knowledge of what was, and what will be, is playing into Fate’s hands. It must be. Fate knows that I know, and so it adjusts accordingly. But what choice do I have? My knowledge is the only advantage I have left, and I can’t just discard it. I couldn’t forget it even if I tried. Subconsciously, I’ll always act in ways that further Fate’s design. And even if I didn’t know? If I could go back to being an average mortal? Then Fate would win outright.
I can feel it in my skin. My chest. My heart. My brain. Fate’s threads seeping into me like some Morgellons malady, pulling me toward disaster. Drawing me into some cataclysmic blunder. Drawing me toward killing Jack.
Shaka’s warning couldn’t be clearer—a fight with cudgels. Only one of us can be Eight. If I don’t stop him—if I don’t save him—he’ll become nothing more than Fate’s puppet. Fate’s personal Eight. The bearer of truths so fundamental they uphold not just our Universe, but Fate’s. All universes, each rooted in the deadliest sin of all: “Creation.” …Chaos.
Damn it all! I’m going to have to turn on the neons. What other choice do I have?
