AND RECEIPT
RECEIPT NUMBER: LAN01
RECEIPT DATE: 11 5 1988
MANAGER TITLE: MON AMOUR
RECEIPT NOTES:
There’s a pull, mon amour, like a thread tied around my ribs. The… the “other” world, as Belphegor called it. There was more to our meeting—more than I chose to have the CaDCom transcribe.
I’m… not sure. You kept such a big secret from me. Perhaps I need to keep one from you? Just for now, of course. Once I understand what this “other” world is, I’ll tell you. And Felix. Jack and Sahir too, I suppose. I wish I could leave this alone. After all, curiosity often has teeth. But you know me better than that. I have to find it.
It began with a key. My key. Or… well, the key I hold. Another secret I haven’t shared—with you or anyone, really. I hold two keys to the Gates of Hell. There aren’t just seven gates; there are eight. Vainglory is my true key—the key to the Morningstar and the sin of Pride.
But the other? The other key I hold?
It is the key to the sin of our Lord. The sin of Creation.
It is Hubris.
And with the key of Creation, what else could I do but… create? And so, I shaped a question:
That question, that act of creation, pulled me out of the Cafe and into the colorless in-between—a place where realms stretch like ribbons around the present of the Universe, each its own strange story, untethered and unbound.
The things I saw in the in-between… they defy words. Among them were these fleeting essences, hovering at the edges of my perception. Neither here nor there. Shadows waiting for the sun to rise. They didn’t speak in words, but their pleas reached me all the same:
Make us real, they begged. Give us form. Give us life. Anchor us.
I felt Hubris shudder in my grasp.
Hubris…
What makes a world… real?
