CAFE RECEIPT
RECEIPT NUMBER: CTA04
RECEIPT DATE: 9 20 19XX
MANAGER TITLE: MON AMOUR
RECEIPT NOTES:
I finally had chance to make our newest employees… well, I suppose he wouldn’t call it “acquaintance” but more so “connection,” right? He’s very pleasant! I’m a bit disappointed we won’t work together directly, at least not for now. But this seems a fair compromise between mon amour and his most trusted associate. Once everything falls into place, we’ll have more time to get to know each other properly.
Secret: I didn’t expect you to call back so soon.
Baltimore: Neither did I. But, [Secret], I think you’ll make a great addition to our team—to our Cafe.
Secret: Happy to be in your employ. Though, now that I’m officially on the payroll… what exactly are we doing out here in Death Valley?
Baltimore: You see those lights over there?
Secret: Yes.
Trusted Associate: We believe they’re signals of “Universal Distress.”
Secret: I see. Distress from all around, or…?
[Mon Amour shook her head.]
Mon Amour: From the Universe itself.
Secret: Ah. You’ve all plunged into the deep end, then.
Trusted Associate: It certainly seems that way. That’s why we need all the help we can get.
Baltimore: Within reason. Secret—you don’t mind if I call you that, right?
Secret: Secret?
Baltimore: Yes, because you’re, in essence, our “secret” employee. Plus, given your many connections, I’d imagine you’ve acquired a few secrets yourself.
Secret: A codename’s mandatory, I take it?
Baltimore: It is. I’m working on a more standardized set of names, but for now, Secret will do?
Secret: Of course.
Baltimore: Wonderful. Secret, we need you to look into this matter for us.
Secret: …“Universe distress.” Hm. I’m… not sure where to start. Any leads?
Mon Amour: Are you familiar with “the Bird”?
Secret: Ah, a codename I do recognize. God, right? One of His many names.
Mon Amour: Mm-hmm.
Secret: You know, I’m good, but even I don’t have God’s number.
Mon Amour: Well, I do, but… that’s the trouble. He’s not answering.
Secret: You… have… Of course! Lady Lucifer!
[Secret extended his hand.]
Secret: I’d heard you were working here, but… wow! Your glamor is impressive—I didn’t even register you as a Prince. Apologies for my—
Mon Amour: Don’t worry!
Secret: Oh! And here—my card.
Mon Amour: …That’s… quite the stack of cards.
Secret: Well, I’m sure you meet a lot of people.
Mon Amour: I’m glad to hear my glamor is working. But yes—God seems to be… gone.
Secret: …I see. That would certainly explain “Universal distress.”
Trusted Associate: Indeed. Secret, we need you to look into this quietly. See if any of your connections have noticed that “the Bird has flown away.”
Secret: Understood.
Baltimore: And don’t let anyone know He’s missing. Keep it a—
Secret: —Secret. Naturally.
