RECEIPT AS OF: 9/07/01
BARISTA ON DUTY: CARAJILLO
RECEIPT FILED AS: C-GRP-03
We met with two Saints, Augustine and Benedict. Though Benedict had a stack of unused invitations to the Spire, they did not work for us. Black Coffee and Galao are convinced that fixing the Spire will help us. I do not see how. We need to focus on leaving this place, not fixing its problems. We are now headed to a “House of Wisdom” to seek counsel on why the Spire might be splintering—Wasting time and effort in the process.

That’s all.

S.O.T.

Benedict: Augustine, we have visitors.

Augustine: Oh? Well, blessings and such. Benny, who are they, and why do they look…

Benedict: Alive? I have no idea.

Black Coffee: Ah, well, I’m [Black Coffee], and these are my associates. We found ourselves trapped here by accident and needed to find a way home.

Marocchino: Yeah, and some weirdo said you two could get us up to the Spire.

Augustine: I see… Well, yes, we have been invited to a few functions up top. Saints usually are. Though, the invitations are for one use only.

Carajillo: What are Saints doing here? Shouldn’t they be in the Morningstar?

Benedict: Ah… the Morningstar… no. Piety does not equal virtuosity, as it turns out.

Augustine: And between you and me, I probably shouldn’t have been there in the first place. But Benny? He was as good as any other! Working and praying and praying and working and—

Galao: Being here doesn’t mean you weren’t a good person.

Benedict: Ah… Lady Lucifer. What brings you all the way down here?

Galao: A mistake.

Benedict: I can relate, as can we all.

Marocchino: Wait… what does determine who goes to the Morningstar and who ends up down here?

Galao: A single moment of your life. A test.

Marocchino: Wait, what? Really? One pass or fail test?

Galao: Sort of… though it’s more like a culmination of everything you’ve done, but—

Benedict: —it comes down to just one choice you made in life.

Augustine: And Lord, don’t we know it! Well, at least we have now to live as we should have then. Anyway, you’ve never used your invitations to the Spire, have you, Benny?

Benedict: I have no interest in reveling with the lustful court of Mistress Asmodeus.

Marocchino: Did you save the invitations, though?

Benedict: Yes. I can fetch them for you. Though… why does Lucifer not simply take you out of here herself?

Galao: I… can’t.

Benedict: I see. A test. Well, I sincerely hope you pass this one.

Augustine: And I’d hurry if I were you. Seems the Spire is bound to snap in half.

Black Coffee: Yes, we heard that it was splintering. Do you know why?

Augustine: I could give you some theological philosophy on why… though you probably wouldn’t be satisfied with “predetermination,” would you? No. I have no idea why the Spire might be splintering. That is a problem for someone more mathematically inclined. If you go just around the Ring, you could meet up with my good pals in the House of Wisdom!
